Bright Futures: Beamy™ Solar-Powered Study Lamps Bring Light to Rural Schools in South Africa
June 5, 2023 – Remote Area, South Africa
A new dawn has arrived in education for the learners in Bushbuckridge, a main town nestled deep in the heart of Mpumalanga, South Africa. Thanks to a groundbreaking initiative by Lambent Energy; a social impact company specializing in renewable energy, hundreds of students now have access to Beamy™ solar-powered study lamps. Beamy™ promises not only to transform their learning environment but to redefine their future prospects.
Lambent Energy (Pty) Ltd, known for its mission to bring sustainable energy solutions to underserved communities, delivered just over 200 Beamy™ solar-powered lamps to the area earlier this week. The donation is part of the company’s “Be Me Initiative," which aims to equip rural schools in sub-Saharan Africa with renewable energy solutions to combat the challenges of costly, limited or unreliable electricity.
Shining a Light on Education
For students like Siphesihle, an 11-year-old who dreams of becoming a doctor, the new Beamy™ lamps are more than just a source of light; they represent hope. “Before, it was very hard to study after dark because our area has no electricity. Now I can read even when the sun goes down,” she says with a wide smile.
Many rural and township schools in South Africa rely on daylight for learning, making it difficult for students to continue their studies once night falls. In households that do not have electricity, children often resort to using kerosene (paraffin) lamps which is an expensive and harmful alternative. The smoke from the paraffin lamps poses a health risk and the cost of fuel eats into families' already strained budgets.
“Access to light shouldn’t be a luxury, especially when it comes to education,” says Mr. Relebogile Kekana, the founder and MD of Lambent Energy. “The Beamy™ lamps allow children to take control of their education, even outside school hours. It’s our way of empowering communities to break the cycle of poverty through education.” Kekana added.
Sustainable Impact
The Beamy™ study lamps are designed with durability and efficiency in mind. Equipped with portable Beamy™ solar panels, the lamps can generate
eight to ten hours of light after a single day of sunlight exposure. The solar panels also have 4 other USB charging functions, allowing students to charge other small electronic devices, further connecting them to the digital world.
Ripple Effect in the Community
The benefits extend beyond academic performance; With Beamy™ now available, families save money on kerosene (paraffin) and children are no longer exposed to the dangerous fumes that come from traditional lighting sources. As a result, health and financial well-being in the community are expected to improve.
A Model for the Future
Lambent Energy's project in Bushbuckridge is part of a larger strategy to create long-term, sustainable solutions for underserved communities across Africa. “We want this to be a model that other companies, governments, and nonprofits can replicate,” says Kekana. “We believe in the power of partnerships to drive change. No child should have to sacrifice their education because of something as basic as light.”
The “Be Me Initiative" is set to reach 50 more schools across South Africa over the next two years, potentially benefiting thousands of children in rural areas. As Lambent Energy continues to scale its operations, it hopes to take its mission to neighbouring countries as well.
